My creatures were always defined by the term "I just throw stuff at a mixer and see what comes".
The good thing about creatures is their diversity, they can be cute, the can be cool looking or ugly as a truck seen underneath. I made my own species of creatures where the main thing is the color pattern and lack of visible mouth.
